November 29, 2013-Fitness Friday

On November 29, 2013 it was a fitness day and we didn't have gym all week so I wanted to make sure I worked hard. We got to participate in the stations where we spend around 40 seconds at each station and then move to the next. I tried doing something new each time we were at the stations. For example, at the running station the first time I ran, but the second time I skipped. I made the class the best for everyone when I was at the sliding station. Instead of sliding myself on the cloths, I incorporated other people in to my exercise by having me run and drag them while they are on the sliders. It was really fun to do it that way and the person dragging the other person got a really good workout because they had to run and use their arms to pull the other person. So the person running got to incorporate a part of their lower and upper body at the same time. I also made the class fun when I was at the ball station where you throw a ball to your partner and your partner catches it. I encouraged my two friends to use a heavier ball instead of using the lightest one because I know they were able to carry the heavier one. This made the class fun because it challenged them and allowed them not to take the easy way out by using the lighter ball.

November 28, 2013-Partner Activity and Dodgeball

On November 28, 2013, both band classes participated in a partner activity, which I thought was pretty fun because it allowed us to use our imaginations and be creative instead of being told what to do. Before we started, Mr. Neufeld told us that this course is about making the class the best for everyone. You obviously still need to work hard in class, but you have to look at the "bigger picture" by contributing to make a fun class. If everyone contributes a little bit, the class would be really enjoyable. So when we did the partner activity, I made the class fun to be in by smiling and laughing a lot, and on top of that I tried my best. Since this was a partner activity, I made sure that I tried even harder because I wanted to make sure my partner had a good time in the class as well.  If you don't try or participate, the class won't be fun. When we did an activity, I put all  my effort in to make sure my partner would find the class to be enjoyable too. The other activity was dodgeball. When we first started playing, I was a little reluctant however after a few minutes passed, I got more in to the game and started to move more toward the front because if you stay in the back, it's not fun for anyone and you will never get tagged that way so there is no point of even playing the game. In the beginning of the game, the question passed  my mind "How will I make this class fun" and then I realized that I should move more in the front and throw more balls. So that's what I did and in my opinion I think I made a difference to the class.  In this gym class I think I showed a lot of positivity. I showed even more positivity than other gym classes because I got to hang out and bond with more people from the other band class too. Overall, I enjoyed both activities and I hope to do something similar to it in the future.

November 20, 2013-Capture the Flag

On  November 20, 2013, I decided to participate in capture the flag on the upper field. Mr. Neufeld told us that the reason why we have choice days is so that we can choose an activity that will maximize our participation in the gym block. So I felt that capture the flag would be an activity where I would be able to participate a lot, as this has been my favourite activity since elementary school. When playing capture the flag, my role was to stay on my territory and to "capture" all the people from the opposing team. I ran a lot while I was trying to tag all the people from the other team. Not only did I get my heart beating faster, but I also had a good time as I was laughing a lot with my friends. I didn't just stand there and gossip with my friends, I actually put the effort in and made this class fun for everyone. For example, when someone from the other team came on our teams's side, I didn't just stand there and watch them; I made an attempt to go and tag them. I wanted to make sure that I really focused on my physical exercise today since we don't have gym all week, and I am happy for achieving that goal. :)

November 17, 2013-Endurance

Today I did around 30 jumping jacks without stopping once. This was a simple and straight forward exercise, however it was more of a difficult exercise to attain. I endured all the jumping jacks and it was actually very tiring! After the jumping jacks, I took a 30 second break and started doing sit ups. I did around 10 sit ups and took another 30 second break. After the sit ups I performed some leg kicks too. I followed this pattern over again but with different exercise moves each time. In the second set, I did a plank for 1 minute, jogging in one spot and arm punches. As you can tell, today I really focused on endurance.

November 14, 2013-Yoga

On November 14, 2013, I decided to do yoga. I already did volleyball and basketball on other choice days so that's why I thought it would be a good idea to try something new today. I haven't ever done yoga in my gym class so I was eager to know what the experience would be like.  By the end of the block, it put me in to a very calm mood and I felt very stress free. While doing the yoga, I got to stretch out many different muscles in my legs and arms. Mrs. Phillips showed and taught us all kinds of different exercise movements, which I will now try myself when doing yoga again at home! :)

November 12,2013-30 seconds On and 30 Seconds Off

On November 12, 2013, we did 30 seconds on and 30 seconds off as a form of fitness. I properly executed all the exercises to the best of my ability. Sometimes if I couldn't perform the exercise, I modified it which helped me a lot. By the end of the block, I was proud to say that on a scale from one to five, that I deserved a five. Not only did I push myself but I had fun while doing it!

November 10, 2013-Yoga

For 30 minutes on Sunday, November 10, 2013 I did some yoga. It was very peaceful for me to have some alone time where there were no distractions. It cleared my mind and was very soothing! Overall, it was a good form of physical exercise!

Interim Report:Gym Period 3 -Day One- Active Learning Reflection

My Own Thoughts:

Since this is a linear coarse, we haven't had a lot of gym classes together, however we have had enough classes for the teacher to have an idea of what kind of students we are. For my work habits mark, a fair assessment for myself would be a G. I think I deserve a G because I have showed my preparedness for the class by always having my gym strip and changing in to it before the class starts. I am good with punctuality as I am never late and I have not missed one class yet; I attend class regularly. I cooperate with everyone in our class and I always have a positive attitude, I don't whine or complain when we have to play a sport that I may not enjoy as much as the others. Even if I don't enjoy the sport I'm playing, I still participate in it and try my best to make it fun for the people who do enjoy the activity, because I would want them to do the same for me. In the beginning of class before we do fitness, I always actively listen to Mr. Neufeld when he tells us what the main purpose of the class is and what we should be doing during the class in order to make it successful. By doing that, it shows my respect towards my learning. On fitness days, I push myself a lot and I am mentally strong to motivate myself to keep on going even if I'm tired or even if my body is starting to ache. For example, we when did the pond run I made sure I ran for the full minute. In addition, when we did the beep test this week I pushed myself to not stop and to run one more way across. Both these examples lead to the success of the class and it leads to the happiness of Mr. Neufeld because he will be proud. I demonstrate a healthy lifestyle by eating the right kind of foods and by exercising daily as shown in my blog. I create a safe environment for my peers by not performing an activity or using equipment without the teacher's instructions. I update my blog on a daily basis and I write some kind of write up for every single gym class. I make myself personal goals that I hope to achieve, which is a very important part of gym class. So each day when I walk into the gym, I know what I'm aiming for. Therefore, I think I deserve a G.

Questions:

During PE this year, how have you shown you are prepared and willing to participate
in a variety of activities?  On what days have you participated to your best effort and
why?  What days have been a struggle for you and why?

During PE this year I have greatly shown my preparedness, as mentioned above. I  am always here on time which show that I'm responsible and I never forget my gym strip for class. By doing those two things, it shows that I am ready to participate. You can always rely on me because I have built my own reputation from September to now, by showing everybody how I am always coming to class. Not only do I come to class, but I come with a positive outlook toward the Active Learning Department. Coming to class is one thing and your attitude in the class is a whole other thing. I am willing to participate in anything the teacher wants us to do. If I feel uncomfortable performing the sport or activity, I still do it because that's the only way you're going to make the class a fun place and that's the only way you will discover new interests and hobbies. The days I participate to my best effort would be fitness days, however I participate to my best effort in every single class even if it's not fitness. I absolutely know that I participate to my best effort on fitness days because that's the day when the the teachers give us a lot of encouragement and support to push ourselves. So their words of encouragement truly do help and give me the confidence to go out there and work hard. The days that have been a struggle would be fitness days, such as when we do the beep tests. These are the days that I work the hardest, due to the amount of motivation needed in order to get a high score. These days are a struggle for me, however I always find a way to persevere through it and make my gym block successful.

How do you contribute to the overall success of the class?  What kind of attitude do
you bring and why?  How do you interact with other students in our class?

In every single gym class, I contribute in some shape and form to the overall success of the class. It may not be very noticeable to my other peers, however it does make a difference. My positivity and my smile makes the class a more welcoming environment.  During gym class, I laugh a lot even at the little things. I contribute by participating in the activity or sport because if you don't participate, you're letting your whole team down when you're playing a sport with your own team. As mentioned, I always bring a very positive attitude because that's the only way gym is going to be fun. You will have more fun at school if you wake up in the morning with a positive attitude. When I first came in to the class in September, I was really quiet because I did not have a solid relationship with anybody in the class. I did not take band last year so it was my first time bonding with the band students. I have made some new friends so far and I have opened up to them as well. At first when you  meet me, I am quiet but as we continue to talk and get to know each other better, I am a completely different person and I talk way more too! I met Pallvi this year in gym and she is a really great friend to me because she was one of the people who was willing to form a friendship with me, along with some others. Overall, I am able to cooperate with all the students in the class and I hope to meet new people and build new friendships with them as well!

Describe your participation during fitness days - have you been able to push yourself
physically?  What types of fitness activities do you enjoy the most?  What fitness
goals do you have for the rest of the year?

On fitness days, I can absolutely push myself physically to keep on going. My goal for each fitness day is to get a good work out, in order to make my body stronger. I really enjoy doing the loco motion. We have not had a chance to do the loco motion this year, yet from my experience last year, I enjoy it because you are able to do a variety of activities instead of just running back and forth like you do in the beep test. I also enjoy doing the beep test because it allows me to have a chance to improve my score and to make my teacher proud. My fitness goals are to always improve each time we do the beep test in the year. I want to get a score of 9.5 by June.  I have set this as my goal because I know I have the confidence and motivation in myself to achieve it. A goal that I made in the beginning of the year was to have better pacing when doing the community run and I have achieved this goal so far. When we did the community run I focused on my pacing and I was able to spread my energy throughout the jog instead of wasting all my energy in the first ten minutes. This will still be a goal of mine as I will continue to focus on that whenever we do long distance runs. I personally enjoy fitness days better than regular days because fitness days are the days when I have an opportunity to set an important goal for myself and to get a really good workout.

What does "leadership" mean to you?  Who are the best leaders in our class - why?

Leadership is key in gym class as it is a skill that you will need in your everyday life outside of school. Leaders aren't always the people who just have a loud voice and are able to shout out loud and command everyone what to do. Leaders are the people who take initiative and volunteer to help organize games in gym class and who are a great influence to the class. Leaders are also the people who do very well in PE by improving every time and by pushing themselves. So the word leadership to me is the process of taking charge and being able to organize activities themselves. I have taken leadership in the class by not running to the change rooms as soon as we are done for the day; I wait a couple of minutes and help put the equipment away or watch someone else how to correctly put it away so I know for next time. I cannot pinpoint out certain people in the class who are leaders, but many people in the class do show traits of being a leader. In order to be a leader you have to be able to take initiative/be a role model, and push youself to strive for success. I think I need to improve in this category a little bit by being more outgoing to the class and help out more when organizing activities. I am able to push myself which shows the other students that I am mentally strong however I need to improve on the other part of being a leader which is to be a bit more outgoing and loud.

What improvements would you like to make in PE by the end of the year?  What are
you the most proud of so far?

The improvements I would like to make in PE this year is to be more outgoing by showing my leadership more and to keep on improving on my beep test scores each time. I am most proud of the fact that I improved my beep test score from last time. I know I can get an even higher score but I am jubilant that I had the strength in myself to get better.

Finally, what letter grade A, B, C+, C, C- (gulp) best represents the effort you just described?

As described in the first paragraph, I think I deserve a G and an A for a letter grade. I think I deserve an A because I am always putting all my effort in everything we do. I have a positive attitude, push myself, set realistic goals for myself, create a safe environment for everyone and  exercise at home too, not just at school. To summarize,  I am enjoying gym class so far and I can't wait to see what my achievements will be at the end of the year in June.

November 4, 2013-Beep Test

Today we did the beep test for fitness day. I am proud of my effort because I improved my beep test score from last time in September. I know I can get a higher score because by the end of grade eight, I was able to reach level 9. I am proud of myself today because I improved. I am still happy about my score, however I am more happy about the fact that I was able to improve. Even if I just improved by a couple of beeps, it doesn't matter because I still got better. Mr. Neufeld told us that today was about properly doing the beep test and to not cheat while doing it. So when I made it to the line before the beep, I waited for the next beep and then ran. Sometimes I even had to remind myself to wait patiently until I heard the next beep. In grade eight I would get a head start and run without waiting to hear the beep because I didn't know we had to wait for it in order to start running again, however this year I made sure I waited for the beep and then ran. After the beep test, we recorded the data for the other small exercises. I'm glad to know that I improved on the muscular strength and endurance category. I also improved in the balance category. The next time we do the beep test, it will be my goal to get a score of 8. I also want to improve my flexibility and my speed. This is realistic for me, as I know I have the confidence in myself and the strong mind to achieve these goals.

November 3, 2013-Weight Lifting

During the evening I lifted two five pound weights. I performed bicep curls and I executed three sets of ten reps, which means I did thirty bicep curls. I am proud of myself because I have incorporated weights in to my daily exercise. This video shows a small portion of my exercise.
